Progressive Betting:

By: Abbadon

Progressive betting, sometimes called progressions is another tool some people use to help them win money. While opinions are split on whether or not any of them work, they are still worth discussing. The most common and well known progression is the Martingale Progression. In this progression you double your bet every time you lose. The theory is that you will win eventually and then end up with more money. The chances you will win one out of 10 hands is very good. In theory some would think this to be a fool proof way to make as much money as desired. However the bad side is that when you lose with this you lose VERY badly.

Example:

  • Start with $5 dollar bet
  • lose and bet $10
  • lose bet $20
  • lose bet $40
  • lose bet $80
  • lose bet $160
  • lose bet $320
  • lose bet $640
  • lose bet $1280
  • lose bet $2560
  • lose bet $5120
  • lose bet $10240
  • etc...

After 12 losing hands your already at $10,240 and you've lost $20,470! Most people can't bank roll that kind of gambling. But you say "I would never lose 12 hands in a row". Well I guaruntee you it will happen eventually and even more often than you would think. Now your odds of winning a hand before losing 12 are extemely good but not a sure thing. All of this started from trying to win your money back plus $5.

Does this mean progressions are useless? No, not in my opinion. I just think that anyone who uses them should add in a bit of loss management. I made up my own progression and tested it through 100's of games of blackjack and it did pretty good.

21 or Bust Progression:

  • Normal bet $5
  • Lose and bet $10
  • Lose and bet $15
  • Lose and cut losses and return to $5 bets

With this progression you are betting $30 that you will win a hand before you lose 3 in a row. If you do lose three in a row you only lose $30 so it's no big deal. Like any progression it works good alot of the time but when things get bad it can make them real bad.

I will add to this with more progressions when I have time.
